National Grid (www.nationalgrid.com)
is one of the largest electricity and gas companies in the world, serving millions
of customers in the UK and USA. |
Grid chose the Pnu Power for more dependable backup with
far lower lifetime operating costs: a real win-win solution
challenge
- provide a ‘no break’ energy supply for 110V electricity switching and
48V communication loads for network substations at National Grid’s
275kV switchyard, Capenhurst, UK.
- reduce ongoing maintenance and testing costs.
- enhance confidence in standby power reliability/availability.
solution
- one Pnu Power 5™ Compressed Air Battery, with a 5kW dual
48/110V DC output, has replaced two existing lead acid
battery standby systems (110V and 48V).
- powered by the facility’s existing air blast breaker compressed
air ring main (cylinders were an option).
- low cost installation in under 2 hours.
benefits
- maintenance reduced to one annual inspection –
significantly lowering operating costs.
- accurate GUI display of system condition and run time
availability increases confidence.
- external weatherproof unit (IP54) frees space in substation.
